We have an exciting opportunity to join our new Protein Production and Analytics group. This group will be in an integral part of the overall success of Eleven, working with state of the art technologies and generating recombinant proteins for cutting edge therapeutics.
The successful candidate will play a key role in generating recombinant protein producing cell lines. He/She will be responsible for the expression of multiple recombinant proteins using mammalian and bacterial cell lines. The candidate must have a thorough understanding and expertise in applied molecular biology, lead and execute multiple research projects and maximize productivity while achieving desired product quality attributes. The individual will provide guidance to other members of the team to continuously improve cell line generation to support ongoing development opportunities. Also, as a key member of the scientific team, the successful candidate will actively participate in meetings and discussion regarding the projects and present inside and outside the organization.
Education & Qualifications
Ph.D. or Masters degree in Cell Biology or Molecular Biology and 5-8 years of proven industrial experience in the engineering of mammalian and bacterial cells.
The successful candidate will have investigated the biology of cell lines to better understand their capabilities in expressing different recombinant proteins. Experience with expressing antibodies, fusion proteins and enzymes, and innovative research that led to intellectual property (IP) and/or publications are required. Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team environment are a must. Understanding of cGMP and how it applies to cell line generation is highly desirable.
We have an exciting opportunity to join our new Protein Production and Analytics group. This group will be in an integral part of the overall success of Eleven, working with state of the art technologies and generating recombinant proteins for cutting edge therapeutics.
As a member of this new team, you will be responsible for the analysis and characterization of recombinant molecules derived from different expression systems. Work closely with cell line generation, cell culture and purification personnel to build an integrated team. The responsibilities include analyzing proteins during cell line generation and cell culture development, in-process and purified samples, stability and formulation studies, technology transfer to CRO/CMO organizations.
Education & Qualifications
The successful candidate will have BS, MS or PhD degree in Biochemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Sciences or a related field, and 5-10 years of experience in an industrial setting involved in analyzing and characterizing recombinant proteins.
In addition, the qualified individual should have extensive experience in protein chemistry and analysis of complex proteins including fusion molecules, glycosylated proteins, tagged-proteins and enzymes. Ability to design, execute and analyze experiments using statistical analysis is strongly preferred.
Extensive experience in methods and automation used in the analysis of proteins such as HPLC including reverse phase and gel permeation, the OCTET platform, densitometry, Biocore, Light Scattering, MALDI, analytical Protein A chromatography, UV-vis and fluorescence spectroscopy.
Experience in setting up, executing, and interpreting stability studies for macromolecules including understanding aggregation and proteolytic damage.
Develop and implement activity (i.e. chromogenic) and quantitation assays (i.e. ELISA immunoassays) for both product and impurities (i.e. Host Cell Proteins)

This position requires a Ph.D. or Masters degree in Biochemical Engineering, Microbiology, Biochemistry or related fields and 6-10 years of experience in an industrial setting, including strong leadership to manage a team of up to 3 scientists
The qualified individual will have extensive experience in mammalian cell culture, media development as well as state of the art production methods including single use technologies. Experience in cell line generation and bacterial fermentation is also desirable.

Build and lead a group of six to eight scientists to create and optimize protein therapeutic products. As group head reporting to the VP of Discovery, responsibilities will include the oversight for all projects of construct design (taking into account available structural data) and build (including phage/yeast display as appropriate); lab-scale expression; and the establishment and execution of functional assays. You will work closely with the Protein Production & Analytics group to ensure high quality stable cell lines, and with the Structural Biology group to have the best data available for designing constructs. In addition, you will participate in the evaluation of new product opportunities.
Requirements
Ph.D. plus at least 10 years’ industry experience in protein engineering/protein chemistry, including display technologies. Experience with molecular biology; diverse cell biological assays and techniques (e.g. in vitro, ex vivo, IHC, HCS, reporter genes, cellular assays, coagulation etc.); proven success in managing groups and a high degree of versatility in cell biological assays; excellent communication skills and ability to work in a highly collaborative environment. Experience in a startup environment a plus.
Responsibilities
Lead a group to design and create protein therapeutic products. Reporting to the Head of Molecular and Cellular Biology, you will engineer proteins that meet the design specifications using molecular biology, including yeast display and site-directed mutagenesis, and assays to establish their function. The specifications may or may not be set in advance, if not, you will be expected to contribute to them. Ideally you will have familiarity with a broad set of proteins and have experience in establishing diverse assay types (biochemical and mammalian cell-based).
Requirements
Ph.D. plus five years’ experience in molecular biology/cell biology/protein engineering or equivalent. Experience with all modern molecular biology techniques, with a strong emphasis on protein engineering projects and display technologies; development and use of assays to measure protein function; cell biology techniques (transfection, reporter assays etc.); excellent communication skills and ability to work in a highly collaborative environment. Experience in industry, and especially a startup environment, a plus.

We are seeking experienced biologists with extensive knowledge and practical experience in molecular and cellular biology to join our newly-created team.
Working in a small team, your primary responsibility is to create novel protein expression constructs, express and purify them from different expression hosts; develop diversified biochemical and cell-based assays to test the activities of the proteins and test them in a variety of native and engineered cell lines as well. The nature of the proteins will be diverse as will be the assays they are tested in.
Requirements
BS plus 3-10+ or MS plus 1-5+ years’ industrial experience, having mastered molecular biology and cell biology techniques. Plasmid construction, mutagenesis, protein expression, ligand-receptor binding assay, IHC, IPs, reporter assays, cell-based assays, all highly desirable. Experience in a startup environment a plus.
Responsibilities
Lead a group to support protein design and engineering efforts, reporting to the VP of Discovery. Responsibilities will include providing key input into projects through all stages of discovery, from analysis of available structures in the design stages to deriving structures of engineered proteins in support of the original design. You will work closely with the Molecular and Cellular Biology group to bring a structural sensibility to the design process, as well as with the Protein Production & Analytics group to generate material for crystallization. In addition, you will participate in the evaluation of new product opportunities.
Requirements
Ph.D. plus five to 10 years’ experience in both protein engineering and structural biology. Experience with protein crystallization, protein crystallography and routine structure determination; mutational analysis and engineering of protein-protein interactions. Familiarity with principles of protein-protein interactions; techniques for analyzing protein-protein interactions (e.g. isothermal titration calorimetry and biacore); and computational methods for structure analysis and in silico modeling (e.g. threading and software such as Rosetta). Experience in industry, and especially a startup environment, a plus.
Responsibilities
Build and lead a group of 4-5 scientists to drive cutting edge research into product opportunities in cytokine biology. As group head reporting into the VP of Discovery, your responsibilities will be to oversee a group to take newly emerging mechanisms in disease and derive product opportunities keyed to specific diseases. You will work closely with the Molecular and Cellular Biology and Protein Production & Analytics groups to test proteins in vivo and in vitro. In addition, you will participate in the evaluation of new product opportunities.
Requirements
Ph.D. plus 7-10 years’ industry experience in product-focused research in cytokine biology, (ideally with biologics), with an outstanding track record of productivity. Experience with animal, ex vivo and cell-based models of cytokine activity; formulation of biologics for in vivo studies; flow cytometry and cell type isolation; proven success in managing groups; excellent communication skills and ability to work in a highly collaborative environment. Experience with protein engineering and with a startup environment a plus.

Lead our efforts at Eleven to identify, research, evaluate and champion new product opportunities based on Eleven’s strategic criteria and our overall mission for the Company. Reporting directly to the Chief Business Officer/VP, Business Development, the successful candidate will form teams and work with senior scientific, clinical and business team members across the Company to ensure all opportunities are vetted appropriately and efficiently, and the best ones ultimately selected to move forward.
Working in a matrix fashion with the head of R&D, the scientific team, the founders, the IP team and business development team, the Director will review validated and emerging mechanisms of human disease to identify technically feasible and commercially relevant opportunities for biologics development. The Director will be expected to search for opportunities in other companies, as well as in academia. In addition, the successful candidate will work directly with the Head of Discovery to identify additional project ideas for discovery, using literature and scientific databases to review ideas for new research programs. This is an exciting opportunity to lead the effort to develop the complete story supporting any particular opportunity and champion it within the Company.
The Director will interface with external groups on a continuous basis, including pharmaceutical companies, large biotech companies and academic institutions, and therefore a fair amount of travel will be necessary. This person will be expected to have strong leadership and communication abilities in that they will have to work with cross-functional teams of scientists, business colleagues, SAB members, founders and others to completely evaluate opportunities and shepherd them through the organization.
Requirements
PhD or MD plus 5-8 years of industry experience, ideally in biologics discovery and/or development, with a track record of effectiveness in matrix roles. Highly effective communication and analytical skills, with a broad scientific background across multiple disease areas, a general understanding of commercial analysis and IP in the drug space, and experience interfacing with academia as well as pharmaceutical companies. Demonstrated strong leadership ability and a passion to drive projects forward. Ability to interface well across both science and business terrain. Experience with product and technology evaluations a plus.
